But after [Joseph] had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 1:20
Joseph had come to a decision that there could be no future for him and Mary together. The angel assured him that Mary’s pregnancy was not due to her sinning but was God’s work in her. He would not be disobeying God by taking her as his wife. That action would probably bring antagonism from the town citizens when the news became common knowledge but that paled into insignificance for Joseph when compared to doing God’s will.
