“Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing,” … He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

Exodus 32:2,4

When looking at this event at Sinai, the truth of Peter’s first epistle resonates more fully with us today –

it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed … but with the precious blood of Christ (1:18-19).

It was not long after Aaron built the calf that those ‘precious metals’ had been ground to dust and drunk by the Israelites – perishable indeed.

We remember with heartfelt gratitude the One who is our God and Saviour. Precious blood.
