When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

Matthew 2:3

We can understand Herod’s unease. That news must have spread quickly, ‘the King is unhappy’. Why would Jerusalem have that sort of reaction too? Perhaps Herod’s eventual infanticide command was not unexpected by the city, for he had a cruel and ruthless streak.

This is the environment his Father sent the Son to, followed soon by being a refugee in Egypt. We have no detail of that time in Egypt, except at the right time the Son was called out of Egypt (Hos.1:11). One day we may understand … for now we are in awe of the plans of God.
