God met with Moses in the Holy of Holies, above the mercy seat, on top of the ark of the covenant. Moses met God by invitation; a privilege we also enjoy. The writer to the Hebrews said, let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (4:16) Grace and mercy, twin pillars of our approach to him today. He is waiting to meet with us, as our hymn puts it, at the blest mercy-seat, pleading for me.
