When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.
Jonah 3:10
No-one is ‘predestined’ to a lost eternity. The purpose of Jonah’s preaching was to give the people of Nineveh an opportunity to repent, to turn from their evil ways and seek God’s mercy and forgiveness. If their behaviour made no difference to God’s response, then Jonah’s preaching was futile.
