Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

Matthew 17:3-4

Seems a nice idea Peter, but it was not to be. Moses, representing the Law and Elijah representing the Prophets were lauded by the Jews and worthy of shelters from the heat of the sun.

The problem was that Peter was putting them on the same level as the One whom he had so recently acknowledged as the Son of the living God. They are not comparable of course. This was underlined for him by voice from heaven declaring pleasure in the Son and the disappearance of the two men.

Let’s never devalue our Lord Jesus by weak comparison or in other ways.
