Esther had not revealed her nationality and family background, because Mordecai had forbidden her to do so.

Esther’s ethnic identity was bound up with her faith identity. In that respect then, could this be an example of discretion being the better part of valour? For most of us though, owning up to our faith in the Lord is unlikely to cause us serious harm and so we should take the part of ‘valour’ and not be afraid to be counted as a follower of Christ. There are many believers who still do take the path of ‘valour’, despite the reality of serious consequences for them and their families. Pray for them.
