‘I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.’

Ezekiel 22:30

What a tragic situation for God’s ancient people – nobody in the whole nation at the time, of the calibre of Moses, who could intercede for the people and prevent God’s righteous judgement! It was the same for all of humankind in our sinful condition before God, facing ultimate judgement for that sin – so his own arm achieved salvation for him (Is.59:16). The Lord Jesus became the One who stood in the gap, bearing the full judgement of God against sin, on our behalf, so that we might have peace with God, a secure eternal future and a life of fulfilment and purpose until then!
