“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. …

He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honour of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”

Numbers 25:11

Phineas in his zeal for God, brought atonement for the Israelites involving a spear and the death of one of their own and a Midianite.

The Lord Jesus, zealous to bring honour to his Father tasted death for everyone bringing many sons to glory. (Heb.2:9-10) That death turned God’s wrath away from both Jews and Gentiles for he is the atoning sacrifice (NKJV – propitiation) for our sins. (1 Jn.2:2)

Phineas was rewarded for his action, and his descendants benefited too.

The Lord Jesus deserves his highest place, but we share in his glory.
