I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.”

Ezra 8:22

Ezra was considering taking up the offer of king Artaxerxes to protect them on the long and dangerous journey back to Jerusalem. He hesitated, ashamed of even thinking of it, remembering the proclamation he made. The Lord asks us to trust him for the very least incidents in our lives. Here they fasted, prayed and committed their way to the Lord and arrived safely after a four-month journey without incident. He will not fail us over our whole lifetime if we continually look to him.
