As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?”

It was time to alert the authorities to the fact that he was a Roman citizen and ensure a fair hearing. Our Lord said his witnesses should be wise as serpents, though harmless as doves.
