The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

Daniel 1:7

The names of Daniel and his three companions referred in one way or another to the goodness of the living God. The names given them in Babylon, erased those references. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah remained faithful to God despite the assault on their spiritual identity. God subsequently honoured their faith and vindicated their unswerving devotion by a miraculous deliverance from the burning, fiery furnace. What a tremendous example!
