But the king replied to Araunah,
’No, I insist on paying you for it.
I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings
that cost me nothing.’

2 Samuel 24:24

David was acutely aware of the importance of what he offered to his God. It had to be perfect and meaningful, and above all had to cost him something.
Is this not a sound principle for us to follow, in everything we do for our Lord God, whether in worship, or in service? What value is there in something that has cost us nothing? Precious little, I would suggest. What he’s done for us cost him everything, so surely, anything we can do in return must come at a cost to us?
