His brothers were not able to answer him,
for they were terrified in his presence.

Genesis 45:3

A not altogether surprising reaction to the revelation ‘I am Joseph,’ given how badly his brothers had treated him! Ashamed and guilt-ridden, they must have had great difficulty in looking him in the face. A similar feeling, one can imagine, to Peter’s when the rooster crowed and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter (Lk.22:60-61).
What about us? One day we will meet him and see him face to face. James Montgomery’s lovely hymn (PHSS 416) poses the question, How shall I meet those eyes? It requires a personal answer and it’s challenging!
