‘Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.’

1 Samuel 8:5 (NKJV)

Despite Samuel’s misgivings, and after consulting the Lord, he granted their request. The Jewish nation insisted on having a king and Saul was the result – not a great success! Israel’s next king, David – described by God as a man after my own heart (Ac.13:22) – was a significantly better choice. How ironic that 1000 years later, the Jews would reject their own king in favour of a Roman emperor! ‘We have no king but Caesar,’ (Jn.19:15) they shouted. ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’ (Lk.19:14)
How about us?
We should be happy to shout from the rooftops, ‘We have no king but
Jesus.’
