When the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, ‘Surely this man was the Son of God!’

Mark 15:39

It’s difficult to imagine anything or anyone making much of an impression on this battle-hardened soldier! But Jesus did. It was the manner of his death that convinced this centurion that he was indeed the Son of God. Some time earlier Jesus had met another centurion of whom he could testify, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’ (Lk.7:9) Two anonymous centurions deeply affected by their encounters with the Lord. Let’s add a third – Cornelius – to complete this God-fearing trio of centurions, illustrating that believers in God’s Son need have no other qualification than their love of the Lord!
