You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

Psalm 51:16-17

David had messed up. He had done wrong and felt sad and disappointed in himself. But he learned that God is willing to forgive even bad sins. He knew it was not a ritual that God wanted to see but broken-hearted repentance. As the Contemporary English Version puts it:

The way to please you is to feel sorrow deep in our hearts. This is the kind of sacrifice you won’t refuse.
