When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “…what is that to you? You must follow me.”

John 21:21-22

As if the Lord hadn’t given him enough personal responsibility, Peter also wanted to know what would be happening to John. The Lord’s reply was very direct: ’What is that to you?’ He reminded Peter of his instruction when they’d first met: ‘Follow me.’ The need to follow never changes and the closer we follow, the more effective our discipleship will be. Peter’s impact began to waver when he started to follow at a distance (Matt.26:58). This led to his disastrous denials. The lesson is clear: stay close to our wonderful Saviour.
