‘I will break down gates of bronze
and cut through bars of iron.’

Isaiah 45:2

This promise of the Lord was penned by Isaiah many centuries before Peter’s miraculous escape from a Roman prison where the iron gates didn’t need to be broken down or cut, as they opened of their own accord, as an angel escorted him to freedom.
Our release from sin’s imprisonment has been even more dramatic; as Margaret Carson’s hymn (PHSS 320), so joyfully puts it,
My chains are snapped, the bonds of sin are broken and I am free.
Let’s never forget what our joy and freedom cost our lovely Saviour.
