When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.
For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

The apostle’s confidence was in the cross of Christ as the heart of the gospel. He was sure that, though reasoning, befriending or kindness can move others, only the suffering of the cross would work upon the worldly-wise Corinthians—merchants, professionals, or philosophers. It was vital that their faith should rest in the power of God, not the wisdom of men.
