‘Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron to give him dignity and honour …
Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel.’

Exodus 28:2,9

The high priest was to reflect the glory and beauty of God, along with his holiness: those three qualities belong together. Aaron was also to bear the names of the twelve clans before the Lord on onyx stones set in gold on his shoulders, as a memorial.
Our high priest bears the names of his people before the Father as he intercedes for us.
