In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

1 Peter 1:6

The encouraging thing about Peter’s words is the difference in time scale between our times of rejoicing and times of grieving. In the preceding verses Peter assures us of the inheritance that is reserved in heaven for each one of us, in which we can rejoice, an eternal inheritance. By contrast, he goes on to say (4:12), the trials we may possibly have to face shouldn’t come as a surprise and will, in any event, be short-lived. No comparison!
