At this the mans face fell.
He went away sad because he had great wealth.
What a waste! Earlier in this story we read that Jesus, looked at him and loved him, before issuing the life-changing invitation come, follow me (v:21). He chose wealth over discipleship. It was sad, for the Lord to see such lost potential and for this rich young man who, like all who turn their backs on him, went away sad. The wonderful reassurance which the Lord gave Peter when he voiced his concerns (vs 29-30) is equally applicable to each one of us!
None shall ever be confounded who on Him their hopes have built.
