But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went; his head was covered, and he was barefoot. All the people with him covered their heads too and were weeping as they went up.

2 Samuel 15:30

An incredibly sad time as a king was forced to flee his capital city in tears! As David crossed the brook Kidron, and climbed on through the Olive trees, he wasn’t alone – many servants and people went with him. 1000 years later, Jesus, the son of David, followed the same route, over the Kidron, into the Olive Garden, with just a few of his disciples. There, on his knees, Jesus wrestled with the horror of his impending journey to Calvary. For the last stage of his final journey, he was on his own.
Alone He bore the cross, alone its grief sustained (J. Swain PHSS 125). What a Saviour!
