The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalm 23:1 (ESV)

David was something of an expert when it came to the role of a shepherd: leading, feeding, providing for, and protecting his sheep, and if necessary, putting his life on the line for them! He could summarise his experience of the Lord as shepherd very simply: ‘I shall not want’. For anything. At any time.
The Lord describes his relationship with us in beautifully simple terms ‘I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep’ (Jn.10:11). We can share David’s confidence as expressed by H W Baker:
I nothing lack since I am His and He is mine forever (PHSS 263)
