The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Psalm 23:1 (ESV)
David was something of an expert when it came to the role of a shepherd: leading, feeding, providing for, and protecting his sheep, and if necessary, putting his life on the line for them! He could summarise his experience of the Lord as shepherd very simply: I shall not want. For anything. At any time.
The Lord describes his relationship with us in beautifully simple terms I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep (Jn.10:11). We can share Davids confidence as expressed by H W Baker:
I nothing lack since I am His and He is mine forever (PHSS 263)
