“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.”

John 15:1

This is the last of the Lord’s seven ‘I am’ sayings, recorded by John and applies directly to us and our service. As branches of the true vine, we need pruning: to cut out dead or diseased wood, promote new, vigorous growth, and maximise our potential for fruit-bearing! Above all, we need to stay close to him. Jesus told his disciples, ‘if you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit’ (v5). This was in the Upper Room shortly before going to Calvary. How poignant that makes his ‘call to service,’ and how eagerly we should receive and act on it!
