He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and burst their bonds apart. Let them thank the LORD for His steadfast love.

Psalm 107:14-15 (ESV)

A badly crippled woman, ‘whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years’, (Lk 13:16) was freed by the Lord. Lazarus was bound in his graveclothes, but Jesus raised him from the dead and commanded, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’ (Jh.11:44). In both cases, the Lord ‘burst their bonds’ literally and brought them freedom.
We too enjoy freedom – from the bonds of sin – because, he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. (Col.1:13) Happily we rejoice this morning: ‘Freed by such love we ponder, the fullness of his grace.’ (J Belton PHSS 101)
