If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

The Lord’s faithfulness, his commitment, is to the promise he has made to grant forgiveness of all and any sin. His ‘rightness’ and authority to do so is on the basis that God’s divine righteousness in having to punish such sin has already been fully met, through Christ’s own sacrificial death. He is alive again to prove it. But there’s an ‘if’ – the forgiveness only becomes effective in each of us when we genuinely confess and repent.
